Lesson 46 – Describing Things (Order of Adjectives)
Anchor sentence: “It’s a beautiful big oval antique dark-brown wooden mirror.”
Main Objective
Students use the correct order of adjectives to describe objects naturally and clearly, and apply it in guided and communicative tasks.
Content – OSASCOMP order
- Opinion: beautiful, ugly, lovely
- Size: huge, tiny, big
- Age: old, new, ancient
- Shape: round, square, oval
- Color: black, dark-brown, red
- Origin: British, Chinese, Guatemalan
- Material: wooden, silk, plastic
- Purpose/Noun: kitchen (table), running (shoes)
Examples: “a really small black suitcase,” “some old French paintings.”
Methodology (45–55’)
- Warm-up (5’): Show the mirror sentence; ask which order “sounds right” and why.
- Discovery (5’): Compare a beautiful enormous black insect vs. an enormous black beautiful insect.
- Input (8’): Short video on order of adjectives (project/link). Build a quick OSASCOMP chart together.
- Guided Practice (10’): Practice 1 – Describe 5 items from the slides using 2–3 adjectives each (peer check).
- Independent Practice (8’): Practice 2 – Choose real objects at home/class and write 4 descriptions.
- Communicative Task (12’): Practice 3 – Role-play Client & Salesperson describing/asking about products; must include OSASCOMP order.
- Exit ticket (2’): Write one sentence with 3 adjectives in correct order.
Teacher Tips & Notes
- Create a visible OSASCOMP poster/timeline and point to it during tasks.
- Allow L1 brainstorming for ideas, but require English for final sentences.
- Fast finishers: add origin & material or justify choices (“because…”).
- Common errors to monitor: color before size; placing purpose incorrectly; overloading 4–5 adjectives.
- Assessment idea (10 pts): Accuracy (4), Range (3), Fluency/Pronunciation in role-play (3).
