LESSON 36: Uncovering the ancient secrets of the Great
Uncovering the ancient mysteries of Egypt
Welcome, Archaeologists! Below are three ancient Sarcophagi containing trivia questions. Hover over them to reveal the answer. If your team guesses wrong, you let the Mummy escape! 😱
How long did it take the Egyptians to build the Great Pyramid?
A) 14 Years
B) 100 Years
Just 14 years! If you said 100 years, the Mummy has awakened! RUN!
What high-tech tool did they use to measure perfect angles?
A) Alien Lasers
B) A piece of string
A piece of string with a weight (a plumb bob). If you said Lasers, the Mummy is coming for you!
What did explorers find decorating the walls of King Khufu's burial chamber?
A) Beautiful Hieroglyphs
B) Absolutely Nothing
Nothing! It is completely plain. If you said Hieroglyphs, you activated the Mummy's curse!
The Great Pyramid is so mathematically precise that it was built 2,000 years before Pythagoras even invented his famous triangle theorem! It is made of over 2 million stone blocks, laid at a frantic pace of 2 stones every 3 minutes for 14 straight years!
Before we watch today's documentary, confer with your fellow archaeologists.
Have you read or seen something about the pyramids?
What theories have you heard about their construction?
What do you think about those enormous pyramids?
LET’S WATCH THIS VIDEO AND LEARN A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THE GREAT PYRAMIDS.
Task 1 (Part 2): Watch the video and ask students to take notes. Task 2: Ask them to share their notes.
If the video transmission fails, use these categorized notes gathered by British archaeologist John Romer.
Discuss these deep-dive questions with your expedition team.
Did you learn anything interesting or new? What was the most interesting piece of info?
What is something you already knew before today?
Do you think they were made by aliens?
How do you think they could have moved those enormous 2.5-ton stones?
Do you think that in order to make such pyramids it was necessary to have advanced architectural knowledge?
