LESSON 65 – SPEAKING

LESSON 65 – SPEAKING

LESSON 65 de Connecting usgt
LESSON 65: The Cinematic Showdown
Director's Note (For the Teacher)

LESSON 65: SPEAKING

The Cinematic Showdown

Part 2: The Pitch. Today, the remaining speakers take the stage to convince the ultimate jury: The Hollywood Producers.

Goal: Persuasive Speaking
Goal: Active Debate & Voting

1. Warm-Up: Explain a Film Plot Badly

Can you guess the famous movie based on these terrible (but accurate) plot descriptions? Discuss with your partner, then hover over the card to reveal the answer!

"A billionaire builds a high-tech flying suit because he refuses to go to therapy."

Iron Man

Marvel Studios

"A very long movie about an iceberg that successfully defends itself against a giant boat."

Titanic

James Cameron

"A group of friends spend 9 hours walking to a volcano just to throw away some jewelry."

Lord of the Rings

Peter Jackson

2. The Reviewer's Lexicon (C1 Level)

Upgrade your speaking today. Before you present or critique, review these advanced terms. Try to use at least TWO during your turn.

A Tearjerker

A movie that is overwhelmingly sad and makes you cry.

A Box-Office Hit

A movie that is incredibly successful and makes a lot of money.

Far-fetched

A plot that is highly unlikely, illogical, or unbelievable.

Action-packed

Filled with excitement, stunts, and constant movement.

A Letdown

A huge disappointment (especially an ending).

A Plot Hole

A gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the logic of the movie.

3. The Main Event: The Hollywood Pitch

Today, the remaining students will take the stage. But you are not just describing a movie; you are trying to convince the class to watch it!

The Pitchers (Presenters)

Your goal is to "sell" your movie/series to the class. Describe:

  • The Hook: Give a brief, exciting summary (No spoilers!).
  • The Vibe: Describe the atmosphere, music, and environment.
  • The Sell: Give your strong opinion on why it's a "Masterpiece" or "A Box-Office Hit".

The Producers (Audience)

You hold the money and the power. Listen carefully and be ready to:

  • Interrogate: Ask one tough question (e.g., "Isn't the plot a bit far-fetched?").
  • Evaluate: Did they use C1 vocabulary effectively?
  • Vote: Decide if you will "Greenlight" (Watch it) or "Pass" (Ignore it).

Producer's Verdict

Audience, after the presentation, what is your decision?

4. The Recasting Couch

Before we wrap up the session, let's play the ultimate Hollywood game. Work with your partner and answer the prompt below.

The Remake Challenge

Choose one of the movies presented today (or yesterday). Imagine Hollywood is making a terrible remake of it. Who would you cast in the lead roles to make it absolutely disastrous, and how would you change the ending to ruin it?

Share your worst ideas with the class!
