LESSON 68: The Hollywood Table Read
Director's Note (¡A salvo, Pame!)

LESSON 68: PART 1

The Hollywood Table Read

Short Film Production • Script Analysis, Synopsis Writing, and Executive Debate.

Goal: Script Reading
Goal: Writing a Synopsis

1. Warm-Up: The Elevator Pitch

In Hollywood, you have 30 seconds to pitch your movie idea to a producer. Discuss these bizarre movie concepts with your partner. How would you "sell" this movie?

The Last Flight

A commercial flight lands safely... but 50 years in the future.

The App

An app that tells you exactly how many times someone has lied to you today.

The Detective

A murder mystery, but the only witness is a Golden Retriever.

Task 1: The Table Read

Since the studio lost the video file, we are going back to the script! Assign two actors for the dialogue and one "Director" to read the actions. Act it out with emotion!

CONFIDENTIAL STUDIO DRAFT
THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN
INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - NIGHT
The carriage is completely empty. Flickering fluorescent lights. Rain violently hits the windows. ARTHUR (40s, nervous, sweating) clutches a black leather briefcase tightly to his chest.
The door slides open. THE CONDUCTOR (60s, pale, calm) steps inside. He holds a silver ticket puncher.
CONDUCTOR
Tickets, please.
ARTHUR
(startled)
Ah. Yes. Right here.
Arthur hands him a faded, golden ticket. The Conductor inspects it closely. He doesn't punch it.
CONDUCTOR
This ticket has no destination printed on it, sir.
ARTHUR
(wiping sweat)
I... I just need to get as far away from the city as possible. Just keep driving.
CONDUCTOR
(smiling faintly)
I'm afraid this train doesn't stop, Arthur. Not until the briefcase is opened.
Arthur freezes. He looks at the briefcase, then back at the Conductor. The Conductor's eyes are completely black. The sound of the train engine turns into a deafening roar.
[FADE TO BLACK]

Director's Notes:

  • What do you think is inside the briefcase?
  • Who (or what) is the Conductor?
  • Take notes on the "vibe" and mystery of this scene.

Task 2: The Studio Pitch (Writing)

Write the official Synopsis (Summary) of this short film.

You must write this to convince a studio to give you $1 Million to produce the movie. Make it sound thrilling and mysterious!

C1 Film Vocabulary to use:

  • Protagonist
  • Suspenseful atmosphere
  • Ambiguous ending
  • Metaphorical
  • Psychological thriller

Task 3: Executive Producers' Meeting

You are the executives at Netflix. Discuss the script you just read. Do we produce it, or do we throw it in the trash?

The Verdict

What do you think about the script? Is it an interesting story, or is it too cliché and predictable?

The Mystery Box

Sometimes, not showing the monster or what's inside a box is scarier. Do you agree, or do you prefer clear explanations in movies?

The Greenlight

Based on the story, would you authorize a $5 Million budget to turn this into a full movie? Defend your financial decision.
