Urban English: The Power of "ON"

Mastering phrasal verbs is a must at the C1 level. Today, we decode how native speakers use "ON" to express attaching and continuing.

Target: Fluency Duration: 60 Mins

1. Icebreaker: The Native Speaker Test

⏱️ 10 mins
Teacher: Have students read both sentences. Ask them why Sentence B sounds more natural in casual conversation. Discuss the difference between formal register and "Urban" English.

Which sounds more like a native speaker?

"I cannot accept the responsibility of any more clients; I must continue working on my current projects."

Formal / Textbook

"I can't take on any more clients; I just need to carry on with my current projects."

Urban / Native

Warm-up Discussion

In pairs, discuss: What is the most frustrating thing about learning phrasal verbs? How do you usually try to remember them?

Real English Insight: The "Attach" & "Continue" Matrix

Instead of memorizing random lists, advanced speakers understand the core concept of the preposition. In English, "ON" often carries two conceptual meanings:

  • Meaning 1: To Attach (physically or metaphorically linking things).
  • Meaning 2: To Continue (movement forward in time or action).

2. The "Attach" Matrix

Put on / Try on

Attach clothes to body

"She puts on socks. Where can I try on this jacket?"

Take on

Attach responsibility/work

"He is taking on more clients at the moment."

Get on (with)

Attach to a person / vehicle

"I get on well with my neighbor. He got on the plane at 9am."

Turn on / Switch on

Attach device to power

"How do I switch the computer on?"

Catch on

Idea attaches to society

"The idea of remote work is really catching on."

3. The "Continue" Matrix

⏱️ 15 mins

Hover over the cards to see how "ON" signifies moving forward in time or action.

Go on

Continue speaking/moving

"Please go on and finish what you were saying."

Carry on

Continue an activity/life

"Keep calm and carry on until the difficult time passes."

Keep on

Continue with an action

"They kept on swimming until they reached land."

Move on

Continue to next phase/topic

"We've finished the accounts, let's move on to marketing."

"He has a terrible cold, but he’s soldiering on."

Action: Find the Mistake

Yeah, I feel terrible. But we have a huge deadline so I just have to today.
Oh no. Well, don't working if you get a fever!
