Kevin Cordón is one of the most famous Guatemalan athletes of our times.

His father admired Kevin Keegan, an English football hero, and that’s how he received his name. But his destiny was not football...

His Childhood

Kevin was born in La Unión, Zacapa. He was very young, but he wanted to go to the Olympic games. He began to play badminton when he was 11. “I’m going to play Badminton. It’s easier to go to the Olympics if I play a different game,” he thought.

Leaving Home (Age 12)

Cordón left his parents and his town to go to the capital city. In the Badminton Federation they gave him training, education, food, and a place to live. His parents let him go because they saw it was his big dream.

2007 - 2008

In 2007 he won the Pan American Games and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games. He was selected to carry the flag of Guatemala in the opening ceremony!

2009 - 2010

In 2009 he won the Pan Am Junior Championship. In 2010, he won three gold medals at the Central American and Caribbean Games.

Tokyo 2020 & The Present

At the 2020 Summer Olympics he won several matches, making it to the semi-finals and ending in 4th place in the world.

Since then, he has participated in many international games. He plays with his heart, that’s why he wins. He still practices every single day and wants to be the best he can. Kevin is an example to all the kids in Guatemala.

How do we know which one to use?

🧠 Regla de Oro (Tiempo Muerto vs Tiempo Vivo):

🪦 PAST SIMPLE (Tiempo Muerto): Usamos verbos en pasado (ej. Won, Left, Gave) cuando la acción pasó en un tiempo que ya terminó.
Ejemplo: "He won a medal in 2009". (El 2009 ya murió/terminó).

🌟 PRESENT PERFECT (Tiempo Vivo): Usamos Have/Has + Verbo cuando hablamos de la experiencia de vida de alguien que sigue vivo, o acciones que llegan hasta hoy.
Ejemplo: "He has won many medals." (Aún vive y sigue compitiendo).
