The Agency Directive: Passive Voice with Modals
Discuss with your class: In movies like Ocean's Eleven or Mission Impossible, the team makes a plan. They never say "John will cut the power." They talk about the ACTION.
In this lesson, we will learn how to give orders and talk about regrets like secret agents!
Spies and professionals use passive modals because the ACTION is more important than the person doing it. There are two time patterns:
Used for things that need to happen now or later.
Used for things that already happened (or failed to happen).
Good evening, Agent. We have a problem. Last night, our secure server was hacked. This should have been prevented, but someone made a mistake. The data might have been stolen by a rival agency.
Here are your new orders: The central computer must be repaired immediately. Furthermore, the security codes will be changed by midnight.
The hacker can be found in the downtown area. He must be arrested before he leaves the country. Remember, if you are caught, nothing can be done to save you. Good luck.
Instructions: Use the formula [Object] + [Modal] + be + [Past Participle].
Example: The house / must / clean -> The house must be cleaned.
Imagine you survived a zombie apocalypse, but your base was attacked. Talk with your partner about the mistakes you made in the past.
"The doors should have been locked. The alarms might have been disabled by a zombie!"
Now, make rules for the future using Present Passive Modals to survive tonight!
"Food must be rationed. The windows should be barricaded immediately."
