Interrupted Actions: Past Continuous vs. Simple Past
Close your eyes for 5 seconds. Imagine you are at home doing your favorite activity. Suddenly... BAM! The lights go out.
Tell your partner:
"What were you doing when it happened? How did you feel?"
(E.g., "I was playing video games. I felt very angry!")
We use the Past Continuous and the Simple Past together to show that an action was in progress when a sudden event interrupted it.
A famous diamond was stolen from the museum exactly at 8:00 PM yesterday during the blackout.
Interrogate your partner:
"Where were you yesterday at 8:00 PM?"
"What were you doing when the lights went out?"
"Who were you talking to?"
You are innocent (or maybe not!). Defend yourself using the Past Continuous.
"I was at home!"
"I was eating dinner with my dog when the lights went out."
"I wasn't robbing the museum!"
