LESSON 75: SPEAKING

Lesson 75 de Connecting usgt
B1 English - Lesson 75: The Main Stage
FLUENCY MASTERCLASS

The Main Stage

How to organize your thoughts and speak for 2 minutes.

⏱️ Warm-Up: Just a Minute!

Can you talk about a crazy topic without stopping?

Rules: The teacher will point at you. You have exactly 30 seconds to talk about the topic on your card. You cannot stop, you cannot say "Uhh", and you cannot repeat words!

🍕 Why pizza should be eaten with pineapple.
🐶 Why dogs are secretly alien spies.
📱 Why we should ban cellphones forever.

"Did your mind go blank? Don't worry! Today we will learn how to fix that."

🧰 The Speaker's Toolkit (Fillers)

Never stay quiet. Use these phrases to buy time while your brain thinks!
To be honest... 🤫
Para ser honesto...
"To be honest, I hadn't thought about this before, but..."
What I mean is... 💡
Lo que quiero decir es...
Use this if you made a mistake and want to explain better.
Moving on to... ➡️
Pasando a (otro tema)...
Use this when you finish one idea and start the next.
As far as I know... 🧠
Hasta donde yo sé...
Use this before giving a fact or an opinion.

📐 Strategy: The 2-Minute Blueprint

How do people talk for 2 minutes without getting lost? Structure!

If someone asks you to talk about "Your favorite vacation", don't just start talking randomly. Organize your mind in 3 steps:

1. The Hook (15s) Don't just say "My trip was good". Start strong! "Today I'm going to tell you about the most amazing trip of my life..."
2. The 3 Details (1m 15s) Break the topic into 3 questions: Where was it? Who was with me? What happened? Answer each one slowly.
3. The Wrap-up (30s) End with a conclusion. "To sum up, it was an experience I will never forget because..."
🚨 PRO TIP: The 3-Second Rule
If you get nervous, pause. Take a deep breath for 3 seconds. The audience will think it is a dramatic pause, not that you forgot your lines!

READY

[Hook]: I’d like to talk about a person who has completely changed my life: my grandfather. To be honest, I haven't realized how important he is until recently.

[Details]: First of all, he is incredibly hardworking. He built his own business from zero. Secondly, he is the funniest person I know. What I mean is, he always has a joke ready, even in difficult times. Finally, he taught me my greatest passion: fishing. We used to go to the lake every Sunday when I was young.

[Wrap-Up]: In conclusion, if I can be at least half the person he is, I will consider my life a success. Thank you.

✅ Practice 1: Stage Presence

Test your knowledge on public speaking rules.
Questions Answered: 0 / 4
1. If your mind goes completely blank during a speech, what is the BEST thing to do?
2. How should you structure a 2-minute speech?
3. What is the purpose of saying "Moving on to..."?
4. Why is breaking your topic into "3 questions" (Who, Where, What happened) useful?

✍️ Practice 2: The Teleprompter (Drafting)

Choose a topic and write your blueprint. Do NOT write the whole speech!

Choose ONE Topic:
1) A memorable trip you took.
2) A movie or book that changed the way you think.
3) A person you admire deeply.

Instructions: Write only bullet points! If you write full sentences, you will try to read them later and sound like a robot. Write ideas.

🎙️ Practice 3: The Main Stage

It is your time to shine. The spotlight is on you!

🌟 The Speaker

Stand up. You have exactly 2 minutes to talk about your topic using the notes you just wrote. Remember to use your *fillers* to sound natural!

👏 The Audience

Listen to your classmate. When they finish, give them a huge round of applause! Then, ask them one question about what they just said.

🏆 Standing Ovation!

You have conquered your fear and mastered the art of public speaking.

Final Reflection:

What was the hardest part of speaking for 2 minutes? Organizing the ideas, or finding the right words?
(Discuss your experience with your teacher!)
