The Art of Gossip: Reported Questions
Instructions: Read the direct quotes from famous movies. How would a journalist report these questions the next day? Click to reveal!
Notice how the verbs step back into the past!
When you report a question someone asked in the past, you must change three things:
It is no longer a question! Change the order to Subject + Verb. Eliminate the question mark.
Direct: "Where is he?"
Reported: She asked where he was.
If the direct question doesn't have a Wh- word (What, Where), you must use IF or WHETHER.
Direct: "Do you like pizza?"
Reported: He asked me if I liked pizza.
Verbs take one step back into the past.

Remember to step back the tense and use the correct word order (Subject + Verb).
Instructions: Write 3 juicy or funny questions (e.g., "Have you ever cheated on a test?"). Ask them to your classmate. Then, report their answers to the class!
