The Emotion Machine: Adjectives ending in -ED and -ING
How to play: The teacher will shout a situation (the cause). You have 3 seconds to make the perfect facial expression matching how you feel!
1. "A frightening ghost appears!" ➡️ (Make a scared face) 😱
2. "A boring 3-hour speech!" ➡️ (Yawn and close eyes) 🥱
3. "An exciting roller coaster!" ➡️ (Scream with joy) 🤩
Notice how the SITUATION causes the FEELING.
Adjectives that end in -ed and -ing are often confused. But they have two completely different jobs.
Adjectives ending in -ed describe an emotion. They tell us how a person (or animal) feels inside.
"I am so bored in this lesson."
"He was surprised to see her."
Adjectives ending in -ing describe the thing, situation, or person that causes the emotion.
"This lesson is very boring."
"That movie was surprising."

Choose 3 pairs of adjectives (e.g., bored/boring, tired/tiring) and write a short sentence for each.
Work in pairs. Choose one topic. Explain if the topic is worrying, interesting, frightening, etc., and explain how it makes you feel (worried, interested, frightened).
"I think the news is very worrying. I feel frightened when I watch it."
"Learning English is exciting, but sometimes it is confusing. I feel interested!"
