The Explorer's Timeline: Present Perfect with For & Since
Imagine you are lost in the jungle. Discuss with your partner:
What are you most afraid of?
"I am afraid of spiders and the dark!"
What are you most interested in discovering?
"I am interested in finding hidden temples!"
Jeffrey is a biologist and has been living in the jungles of India, Africa, and other countries for more than twenty years. He likes to study animals, specifically apes. He has studied gorillas in Africa, macaques in India, and capuchins in the Amazon rainforests.
He loves monkeys because they have characteristics that are very similar to humans. He has been studying their behavior since 2002. He has discovered that monkeys have likes and dislikes, just like us. Also, they have fears and interests.
Jeffrey has been observing these animals for many years. He found out that they are afraid of the same things humans are, like darkness, snakes, and spiders. They also show interest in different things. Some of them are interested in playing in groups, while others prefer to be alone.
Some people think that he has discovered amazing things, but others think that he has wasted a lot of time and resources.
We use FOR and SINCE with the Present Perfect to talk about time. But they have very different jobs!
Indicates the amount/duration of time that you have done something.
"He has studied monkeys for twenty years."
Indicates the exact moment or point in the past when the action began.
"He has been studying them since 2002."
