Waitress (Karla)
Chef, the people are starting to get upset. Hurry up!
Chef
Oh, Karla, I’m glad you’re here. Put some peas on those plates.
Waitress (Karla)
I’m not a cook. I’m a waitress!
Chef
I know that! But we’re short of people here. Please, help.
Waitress (Karla)
All right. How many peas should I put in?
Chef
One of those big spoons. And plenty of gravy. There’s enough gravy for at least 100 dishes.
Waitress (Karla)
Okay. What else?
Chef
Put some salad, too. And a little dressing. There isn’t enough dressing.
Waitress (Karla)
Done. I’ll be back right away.

⚖️ Grammar Core: The Chef's Scale

How do we express quantities when cooking (or in life)?

Quantifiers tell us exactly how much of an ingredient we have. Look at the gauge below to understand their meaning:

TOO MUCH 🚨
(Excess/Negative)
150% (Disgusting!)
PLENTY OF 🌟
(Abundant)
100% (More than enough)
ENOUGH ✅
(Sufficient)
60% (Just right)
NOT ENOUGH 📉
(Shortage)
25% (We need more!)
⚠️ Countable vs. Uncountable Rule:
Use Too Much for singular/uncountable things (water, salt, time).
Use Too Many for plural/countable things (apples, people, cars).
"Plenty of" and "Not enough" can be used for BOTH!

🍽️ Practice 1: The Gordon Ramsay Test

You are the Head Chef. Choose the correct quantifier to fix these problems!
Plates Served: 0 / 5
1. Ugh! I cannot eat this soup. You put __________ salt in it!
2. Don't buy any more potatoes. We have __________ potatoes in the fridge.
3. We cannot make the cake. The recipe needs 4 eggs, but we only have 2. We have __________.
4. The restaurant is super slow today. We have 20 waiters but only 2 customers! There are __________ waiters.
5. Is the steak okay? Yes, it's perfect. There is just __________ gravy.

📖 Practice 2: Surviving the Kitchen

Read about the hard life of a cook, then write a review!

Working in a restaurant kitchen is no child’s play. You need to know about spices, vegetables, meats, and other types of ingredients. Besides this, you need to know about knives. There are many types of knives and you need to know what each one is for. Also, there are different types of cutting boards, and you need to know how to use them.

This is just the beginning. You need to be good at working under stress. The chef is always yelling, telling everybody what to do, but not always how to do it. You are supposed to know that. You need to learn to work fast, and do many things at the same time.

The most difficult part of all, at least for me, is learning the nutritional values of every meat and vegetable. Working in a restaurant kitchen is hard, but it’s very satisfactory when you realize that the dishes are ordered frequently. That means that the people liked your food.

📝 Writing Task: The Yelp Review

Imagine you went to a terrible restaurant yesterday. Write a short review (3 sentences) complaining about the food using too much, too many, and not enough.

🗣️ Practice 3: Kitchen Confessions

Talk about your own experiences in the kitchen.

🏆 The Masterpiece

  • What is the most delicious meal you have ever made?
  • What ingredients did it have? (Did it have plenty of cheese?)

🔥 The Disaster

  • What is the worst meal you have ever cooked?
  • What went wrong? (Did you put too much salt? Not enough time in the oven?)

🍽️ Service Complete!

You have successfully survived Hell's Kitchen.

Final Question to Discuss:

Do you think working in a restaurant kitchen is easy or hard? Would you like to work there for a couple of days to live the experience?
