Who is the Boss? Mastering Causative Verbs

🎭 Warm-Up: The Puppeteer

Who controls who? Let's play a game of commands!

"Simon Makes You..."

Instructions: One student is the "Boss". The Boss must choose a classmate and command them to do an action. The rest of the class reports what happened!

Boss (Maria): "David, jump three times!"

Class: "Maria made David jump three times!"

🧠 Grammar Core: The Two Gangs

Causative verbs express that someone causes another person to do something.

In English, causative verbs are divided into two "gangs" (pandillas). You must learn which verbs require "TO" and which ones do not!

1. The "Base Verb" Gang
MAKE / LET / HAVE + Person + Base Verb

These verbs are strong. They don't need "to".

  • Make (Force): My mom made me clean my room.
  • Let (Allow): She let me go out.
  • Have (Assign): I had him fix the car.
2. The "To" Gang
GET / FORCE / ASK + Person + TO + Verb

These verbs require the "to" connector.

  • Force: They forced him to wash the dishes.
  • Get (Convince): I got my sister to help me.
  • Ask: He asked her to hurry.

Tom was a rebellious boy. He didn’t like to be told what to do all of the time. His father always forced him to mow the lawn, and his mother made him wash the dishes. His teachers always got him to do his homework.

Tom couldn’t take it anymore. One day he decided to leave home and join the Army. He thought that in the Army, they would let him do whatever he wanted.

But what a surprise he had! Tom wanted to sleep late, but the Sergeant forced him to get up at 3:30 AM and made him run for one hour every day.

He wanted to relax, but the cook had him peel 300 potatoes. He wanted to play, but the sergeant got him to stand in guard for eight hours!

Poor Tom. As soon as he could, he left the Army and went back home. He was happy to let his parents tell him what to do.

Write 2 sentences about something you make yourself do every day (a good habit!), and something you don't let yourself do.
