Passive Voice Across Several Tenses
Discuss with your class: If you bought one of these houses, what is the FIRST thing you would fix?
"The toilet needs to be replaced immediately!"
In renovations, we rarely care who did the work (the painter, the plumber). We only care about the result on the house. So, we use the Passive Voice.
When something requires immediate action:
Object + need(s) to be + Past Participle
"Hi, property brothers! Recently, my husband and I bought a classic Victorian house. I was delighted when I saw it the first time, but of course, it’s a total fixer-upper.
Some work has already been done. For example, the front door was replaced last week, and the old carpets have been removed. However, massive renovations still need to be done.
The roof tiles are falling apart, so they need to be changed immediately. Several windows are shattered, and the ancient water pipes need to be fixed. Also, the jungle outside is terrible; the lawn needs to be mown. Can you help us? Our budget will be transferred to you tomorrow."
Instructions: Use the formula [Object] + need(s) to be + [Past Participle].
Note: Windows / repair -> Windows need to be repaired.
Are there things that need to be fixed, changed, or done in your actual house right now?
"In my house, the kitchen walls need to be painted, and my computer needs to be updated."
If you won the lottery and bought a mansion, what luxury things would be done?
"A giant pool would be built in the garden, and the floors would be covered in gold!"
You survived the construction zone and mastered the Passive Voice.
