🕰️ Grammar Core: The Dead Habit

How do we talk about things that were true, but aren't anymore?

We use used to + base verb to talk about states or habits that happened in the past, but are NOT TRUE NOW. The habit is "dead".

✅ Affirmative

Subject + USED TO + Base Verb

"I used to play video games all day." (But now I don't).

❌ Negative & ❓ Question

Because we use DID / DIDN'T (which are already in the past), the word "used" loses its "d"!

Subject + DIDN'T USE TO + Base Verb

"I didn't use to like vegetables." (NOT: didn't used to).

DID + Subject + USE TO + Base Verb?

"Did you use to be chubby?"

🗣️ Speaking Tip: Fast Pronunciation
Native speakers rarely pronounce the "D" clearly. When spoken fast, "used to" sounds like "yoos-ta".
Listen: "I yoosta go to that school."
