LESSON 53: WHAT DID HE ASK YOU? – INDIRECT QUESTIONS CONVERSATION
Mastering Indirect Questions
Instructions: Stand in a line or a circle. The teacher will whisper a "Secret Direct Question" to the first agent. You must whisper it to the next person.
Example Codes:
The last agent must say the question out loud! Did the message survive?
*Notice how they don't say "Where is the package?" or "Why did he change it?". They use indirect phrases!*
Direct questions (Where is he? What time is it?) can sound rude or aggressive. To be polite, we use Indirect Questions.
Step 1: Choose an Introductory Phrase
Use the Question Word (Where, What, When) + Positive Sentence Order.
If the question has no Wh- word (e.g. Is he here?), use IF.
Change these direct ideas into polite, indirect questions starting with "Could you tell me...?" or "Do you know...?"
Instructions: Go around the classroom (or Zoom breakout rooms). Ask your 3 indirect questions to different classmates.
Student A: "Could you tell me where you live?"
Student B: "I live in Zona 10."
You are now a master of diplomatic communication.
