The Passive Voice: Focus on the Creation
Discuss with your class: Do you know the origin of these famous things?
Notice how we focus on the OBJECT (the movie, the phone), not the person who made it!
Imagine a theater stage with a spotlight.
"Jack Smith wrote that novel in 1912."
Here, Jack Smith is the most important piece of information.
"That novel was written (by Jack) in 1912."
Here, the novel is the star. "By Jack" is optional.
Present: The chips are manufactured.
Past: The house was built.
Future: The car will be polished.
Welcome to our global food series. Today, we ask: Where are bananas grown?
Every year, millions of bananas are consumed around the world. But before they reach your supermarket, they go through a long process. First, the bananas are grown in tropical climates, usually in Latin America or Africa.
Once they are ready, they are carefully harvested by local farmers. Then, the bananas are washed and packed into large boxes. Finally, they are exported on huge cargo ships to countries in North America and Europe.
Interestingly, the famous company "Chiquita" was founded over 100 years ago, and today, their bananas are sold globally. So next time you eat one, remember its amazing journey!
Step 1: Find the Object. Step 2: Add To Be (am/is/are/was/were). Step 3: Use Past Participle.
Example: Somebody made my shoes in Italy -> My shoes were made in Italy.
Pick an object in your room (a phone, a shirt, a book, a coffee mug) and examine it.
Present the item to the class using the Passive Voice. Answer:
"This shirt was made in Bangladesh. It is made of 100% cotton, and it was bought last year."
You have successfully mastered the Passive Voice.
